Family-Based Green Card

Permanent residence based on a qualifying family relationship.

About this visa

Family-based immigration allows eligible U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents to sponsor certain relatives. The qualifying relationship and the sponsor's status determine the category, the available process, and whether annual visa limits apply.

Cases require evidence of the relationship and a review of immigration history, admissibility and financial-sponsorship obligations where applicable. A person in the United States may qualify for adjustment of status, while another may need consular processing abroad. Those routes are not interchangeable, and travel or filing decisions should follow an individualized assessment.
